The impact of off road riding

Working in the countryside I see first hand the impact the increased demand for public access is having on the environment.

So when out on our bikes we all need to think about how we can minimise our impact on the environment.

So when you are planning or out on your ride:
Leave no litter
Respect other users
Stick to managed trails
Between March and August stick to tracks in open grassland and heathland as ground nesting birds will be sat on eggs.
When approaching horse riders speak to the riders as this helps settle the horse, as the horse then realises that this brightly coloured thing approaching is human.
Follow information/warning notices of forestry operations or conservation areas and stay clear
Avoid historical features
Avoid plants and vegetation as these provide shelter and food for the wildlife, so stick to the muddy, stone tracks.
Speak to the local cycling shops, and landowners such as the Forestry Commission, National Trust for information on where is best to ride and what is to be avoided at various times of the year.

Then by adopting the right attitude cyclists will be welcomed into the countryside for generations to come and we will all be able to enjoy the adrenaline driven sport of cycling in a beautiful diverse landscape.
