CHARLIE BETTELEY

Born in Stafford on 13th November 1920, Charlie Betteley sadly passed away while out riding his bike on Sunday 25th November 2012.

A long-time member of the LVRC, having joined when it started in 1986, Charlie was an enthusiastic road racer with a successful string of veteran titles including one World Masters and four National LVRC road race championship wins.

Riding in Stafford Road Club colours for most of his career, Charlie was one of the pioneers of road racing on the open roads in the UK and held a BLRC first category licence. He was National Grass Track Champion over 5 miles in 1949.

In 1958, he took a rest from road racing, during which he remained an enthusiastic club rider and competed very successfully in local time trials until the lure of veteran racing drew him back into the fray.

With Stafford RC, he won the Club Road Race Championship in 1985, and the Club BAR (over 50, 100 and 12-hours) in 1990, and every year from 1992-1998.

After his retirement from racing, Charlie continued to give his club colleagues a hard time on club runs, particularly on the hills, and was still riding at least 100 miles a week up until his final ride.
